The Father of American landscape painting, Inness was influenced by works by old masters, by Hudson River School painters and Barbizon School painters. He studied in Rome in 1851 for several months and to Paris during the same period. He was a member of the National Academy of Design. His work developed from keen observation of specific locations to a more spiritual depiction of the land during maturity.
