Oil on canvas, winter landscape, signed "Axel Gallen", 61x25 cm. The painting was presented to sales to a major auction house in Helsinki by three men. They tried to sell a number of fake paintings worth a total of about one million Euros. The artists were European, and Russian. This painting was for sale for Euro 22,000. The men were never convicted for lack of evidence.
Oil on canvas, portrait of the artist Hugo Simberg, signed "Axel Gallen" and dated 1897, 27x21 cm. Ostensibly depicting a genuine painting by the Finnish artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela. The painting was seized when a man tried to pledge it at a pawnshop in Lappeenranta, Finland. The painting is made of Gallen-Kallela style and is painted with a material that did not exist at the time Akseli Gallen-Kallela was active. The man claimed he had bought the painting for 28,000 Finnish mark (about 4700 Euro). He wanted to pledge it for Euro 1000. After an expert assessment and judgment declared that the painting is not genuine. It is a forgery.
