Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse began his training as a goldsmith prior to entering the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1840 under Pierre-Jean David d'Angers. In 1850, Carrier-Belleuse moved to London where he worked until 1855, designing ceramics and metalwork models. In 1857, he exhibited sculptures at the Salon, having received medals and important commissions as a result. From 1851 to 1870, Emperor Napoleon III hired him to work on the rebuilding of Paris.
