Alexander Alexandrovich Roubtsov was the adopted son of the Academician Yan Frantsevich Tsionglinsky (1858-1912), a painter known for his orientalism much loved by Pavel Tretyakov, who acquired several of his works. Roubtsov studied under Repin at the Imperial Academy before becoming interested in the avant garde, and joining Nikolai Kulbin's group Triugolnik (Triangle). He emigrated to France before the First World War, where he continued to make a career as a painter, exhibiting in the Salon des Independants in the 1930s. He travelled extensively in Tunisia from 1915 onwards.
