B. PRABHA
1933–2001, India

Born in the village of Bela, near Nagpur in Maharashtra. Studied at the Nagpur School of Art and the J.J. School of Art in Mumbai. She specialized in immortalizing the plight of woman in India, landscapes, social issues, hunger and homelessness. She was married to another artist, B. Vithal in 1956; they exhibited jointly. At this juncture her work moved from more abstract to her more mature style. Of note is the fact that she built a strong career in painting even though coming from a social tradition that maintained an oppressive attitude toward women.
