Carita Schmidt
Carita Schmidt, schwedisch-finnische Künstlerin, 1958 geboren, wuchs in Deutschland, Finnland und Schweden auf. Von 1990 bis 2011 lebte und arbeitete sie als Künstlerin in Griechenland. Seit 2012 ist sie in Berlin freischaffend tätig. In ihren Werken und Ausstellungen als international agierende Künstlerin kommen verschiedene Künste, Sprachen und Kulturen zum Ausdruck.
„Imaginative Views“
Carita Schmidt, bewegt sich seit langem schon zwischen den Polen des „Aussen“ und
„Innen“, den Bedingungen menschlicher Existenz und natürlicher
Präsenz. Sie hat dieses Spannungsfeld sinnlicher Befindlichkeit beschrieben
in früheren Performance-Projekten wie "Adamah“, in grafischen Arbeiten wie
„Adamah/frictions“ oder in „Tod, Liebe, Leben“. Ihre Arbeiten gehen dabei
über einen gewöhnlichen Realismus hinaus, werden eine zweite Haut
über der Realität, die sie beschreibt, quasi eine Zwichenschicht, die sich über
die jeweiligen Objekte von Wahrnehmung und Beschreibung legen.
Carita Schmidt, die seit 2012 in Berlin lebt und arbeitet, bringt vielerlei internationale Einflüsse
mit – sie hat in der ehemaligen DDR, Finnland, ehemaligen BRD, Schweden und in Griechenland gelebt.
Ihre Arbeiten wurden in zahlreichen Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen in Europa
und den USA präsentiert. Sie ist zudem in privaten und öffentlichen
Sammlungen in Europa, USA und Mexiko vertreten. Carita Schmidt hat auf
Einladung der Galerie Kuhn & Partner die Ausstellung „Imaginative Views" für
das Hotel Scandic konzipiert.

Carita Schmidt, Swedish-Finnish artist, born in 1958, grew up in Germany, Finland and Sweden. From 1990 to 2011 she lived and worked as an artist in Greece. Carita Schmidt
Carita Schmidt, född 1958, Berlinbaserad konstnär sedan 2012 växte upp i Tyskland, Finland och Sverige. Hon var bosatt i Sverige under 1980-1990 och utbildade sig på Filmhögskolan DI i Stockholm. Under åren 1990 och 2011 var hon verksam i Kavalla och Aten i Grekland. Från 2007-2011 var Carita Schmidt intendent för det Svenska Ateninstitutets gästhem ”Kavallahuset” i Kavalla. Kavallahuset är
ett svenskt gästhem för akademiker, konstnärer och kulturarbetare. Sedan 2012 är hon verksam i Berlin.
Carita Schmidts mångbottnade verk visar fascinationen för rörelse och dess figurativa framställning.
Genom ett tydligt formspråk ger hennes bilder uttryck för djup, densitet och substans. Gränserna mellan teckning
och målning flödar i varandra. Kolteckningar, oljemålningar, akvarellstudier och reliefer är en del av hennes repertoar.
Med få linjer förmedlar Schmidt den mänskliga kroppens dynamik. Människans unicitet, emotioner och sårbarhet
liksom hennes strävan efter utveckling står alltid i förgrunden. Hennes figurer rör sig mellan euforiskt liv och kontemplativ tystnad.
Sedan år 2000 bearbetar Schmidt sitt tankeflöde till rörelse och metamorfos i alltid nya, överraskande nyanser.
En viktig utgångspunkt för hennes konstnärliga skapande är ADAMAH-projektet. Adamah betyder åkerjord på hebreiska.
Detta projekt utgörs av tre huvudverk, varav två är monumentala kolteckningar - Ta panta rhei, 152 x 538 cm, 1999; Here I am 152 x 338 cm, 2001 och ADAMAH-performance som kortfilm (9 min) vilken producerades i Philippi, Grekland, år 2000.
Philippi är en antik ruinstad belägen i nordöstra Grekland. Platsen kan uppfattas som magisk enbart på grund av sin historiska bakgrund på grund av slaget mellan Cassius och Brutus. I ADAMAH-performancen låter Schmidt ett par dansare, heltäckta med lera,
improvisera kring en koreografi för att visualisera livscirkeln och katharsis (reningen). Dansscenen består av lera.
Rum, tid och kroppar smälter samman i en dynamisk rörelse. Dansarna gestaltar mänskliga mönster där vi bygger upp och samtidigt bryter ned det vi har skapat. Jorden och leran med dess betydelse för människan genom historien sammanbinder en kroppsnära och visuell kraft. Dansarna i ADAMAH utvecklas genom den faktiska upplevelsen.
Carita Schmidt is a Finnish-Swedish visual artist, born in Germany and partly brought up in Finland and Sweden. This is why Caritta has the advantage of having three native countries: Sweden, Finland and Germany.

Greece has become the country of her choice and she has been living there since 1990 directing her own art studio and private art school until 2007.

2007 to present.
Curator of the Swedish House in Kavala. The Swedish House is a guesthouse for Swedish writers, artists, cultural-workers and scientists who wish to work for some time in Greece focused on a project. The Swedish House is a branch of the Swedish Institute of Athens.
During these years she developed a successful way of teaching her special drawing techniques in numerous workshops by using exercises that activate the right hemisphere of the brain, which specialises in finding artistic solutions. Through these techniques she has helped a large number of
students discover their own artistic abilities.
In 2000 Caritta designed the label for the exclusive 1997 red and white wine “Magiko Vouno” for the wine producer Nikos Lazaridis.
In 2000 she received a three-month grant as “Artist in Residence” from the Vermont Studio Center, USA.
In the years 1999-2001 Caritta organised and staged her art performance and art video “Adamah” (Hebr. earth, dust, clay). One of these performances took place in the ancient ruins of Philippi, northen Greece, whereas a second one was held in the “Old Archaeological Museum Geni
Tzami” in Thessaloniki, where the video was also screened.
She has had nine solo exhibitions and has taken part in about fifty group exhibitions, both in Europe and in the USA. Her two latest solo exhibitions took place in the Archaeological Museum of Kavala and in Sigtuna Kulturgård, Sigtuna, Sweden.
Since 2007 she has been directing the Swedish Guest House “Souidiko Spiti” in Kavala. She continues to be a devoted and productive visual artist.
Caritta Schmidt förenar i serierna adamah och friktioner två sidor av sitt konstnärskap - kroppen och ljuset i rörelse. Kontrasten mellan serierna är slående samtidigt som de på ett subtilt sätt öppnar upp för dialog mellan varandra. Carittas arbeten är mångbottnade och kan tolkas på åtskilliga plan. Varje streck och penseldrag har en mening som tillför något till helheten.
I adamah utforskas människokroppen i rörelse. Som betraktare dras man med i det extatiska rörelsemönster som kolfigurerna hänger sig åt. Tecknandet är säkert och linjespelet som återkommer i friktioner är kraftfullt. Vi går från att vara betraktare till att bli en del av konstverket när impulser till dans fortplantas i våra kroppar. Leran som täcker dansarnas kroppar och som håller kvar dem på marken skapar associationer till de förstenade människoformer som grävts fram i Pompeji, Italien. I ett performance som Caritta organiserade i den antika ruinstaden Philippi i nordöstra Grekland låter hon dansarna få liv och ägna sig åt att utforska varandras kroppar. I sitt performance gestaltar hon människosläktets drivkraft och vilja att skapa, förstöra och inhämta nya perspektiv genom katharsis (rening) för att sedan upprepa sig själv. Ett av verken kallar Caritta Jag är - alltså lever jag och är en del av serien Einai (vara med/delaktig i alla invecklingar som livet medför). Leran förenar dansarna och ibland tycks kropparna smälta samman till en gemensam form. Ett suggestivt samspel skapas mellan dansarna och deras tecknade alter egon.

Adamah and Frictions: Caritta Schmidt
In two separate series, ”Adamah” and “Frictions,” Caritta Schmidt unites two sides of her art: the body and light in motion. There is a striking contrast between the series, at the same time as there is a subtle opening for dialogue between them. Caritta’s work is many-faceted and can be interpreted on a multitude of levels. Each line and brushstroke holds a meaning that adds something to the work as a whole.
“Adamah” explores the human body in motion. The viewer is drawn into the ecstatic patterns of movement of the charcoal figures. The drawing is sure, and the play of lines which returns in “Frictions” is powerful. We go from being viewers to becoming a part of the work of art when the impulse to dance is transmitted to our bodies. The clay that covers the dancers’ bodies and that holds them to the earth creates associations to those preserved human forms that have been uncovered in Pompeji, Italy. In a performance that Caritta organized in the ancient ruins of Philippi in northeastern Greece, she lets the dancers come to life and engage in exploring each other’s bodies. In her performance she represents the human drive and will to create, destroy, and derive new perspectives through catharsis (purification), a process which continually repeats itself. One of the works is entitled “I am—in other words, I live,” and it is part of a series called “Einai” (to be involved in all the complexities that life engenders). The clay unites the dancers, and at times their bodies seem to melt together into one common form. A suggestive interplay is created between the dancers and their drawn alter egos.

The focus of “Frictions” is on the light of the Mediterranean Sea. The works in the series bathe in this light, which moves the viewer to step back. The composition in all the paintings is the same, while the colors vary. The point of departure for the series is a work which makes the beholder think of a medieval tapestry. The painting displays similarities with the works of such abstract expressionists as Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner. The play of light in this work returns in the other paintings in the series.
Caritta combines her skilled craftsmanship with a humanistic depth which invites contemplation. With surely drawn charcoal lines she gives life to her figures in the same way as she lets her brush recreate the frictions of light.

I friktioner är det Medelhavets ljus som står i fokus. Verken i serien badar i detta ljus vilket får betraktaren att ta ett steg bakåt. Kompositionen är den samma i målningarna medan färgerna varierar. Utgångspunkten i serien utgörs av ett verk som för tankarna till en medeltida gobeläng. Målningen bär på likheter med verk av abstrakta expressionister så som Jackson Pollock och Lee Krasner. Ljusspelet i detta verk återkommer i de andra verken i serien.
Caritta kombinerar ett skickligt hantverk med ett humanistiskt djup som öppnar upp verken för kontemplation. Med säkra kolstreck ger hon liv åt sina figurer på samma sätt som hon låter penseln återskapa ljusets friktioner.
