Dominic Serres (b.1719/1722) joined the French navy and later came to England after his ship was captured. His nautical interests soon began to inspire a career as an artist. His early work most usually depicted calm seascapes. Financial success as a painter provided him with the opportunity to experiment with more dramatic compositions. In 1768 he became a founding member of the Royal Academy, and was later made marine painter to King George III.
