Kupsch was a member of the Ateliergemeinschaft Klosterstrade ) Abbey Street studio community) which lasted from 1933-1945. With the consent of the Ministry of Science, Indoctrination and National Education, artists were allowed to rent one of forty available studios. Some of the other artists who took up residency were Kollwitz, Gilles, Held, Blumenthal, Kaspar Abel, Marcks and Schreibe. By the end of the war the Abbey Street Studio community was destroyed along with all the artwork contained within the studios. This piece was most likely produced during his stay at Abbey Street, escaping the destruction imposed later.
