Franz Erhard Walther was born in Fulda in 1939. In the beginning of the 1960s he studied with Gerhard Richter and Sigmar Polke under Karl Otto Götz at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. He was one of the first action artists, whose best known representatives later became Franz West and Erwin Wurm. In 1971 he became professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg, where among other his students included Rebecca Horn, Santiago Sierra and Martin Kippenberger and Jonathan Meese. The aim of the artist is to encourage and enable the viewer to dealing with the artistic objects and gain a new experience. As a pioneer of the so-called ‘process art’, Walther came to international recognition he deserves. He exhibited several times at the documenta in Kassel. His works can be found among others in collections such as the MoMA, New York, the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, the Hessische Landesmuseum as well as the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
