Germán Herrera (b. Mexico City, 1957) has had a long career as a photographer, working in both the tradition of the street photographer and as a constructor of symbolic images. The works on exhibition here, produced since 2001, represent an artist who has established a mature, richly eloquent voice. Using digital technology he merges images of an array of common and enigmatic objects, natural elements, historic references, and textures and atmospheres. In doing so, he conjures a world that is at once wholly real and imagined – a chronicle of the subconscious. Many photographers working with the formats of constructed imagery or photomontage do so with a keen sense of intentionality, as a means of conveying a specific statement or idea. Herrera, in contrast, relies greatly on intuition and emotion, more interested in the possibility of locating meaning outside the arenas or pure intellect and reason.
Herrera has spoken of this body of work as a “book of self,” an expression of the totality of the beliefs, feelings, fears, and myths that reside within him. But in evoking a personal sphere he ultimately creates spaces for the contemplation of the universal. Each image functions as a kind of mirror that offers the potential to recognize something of ourselves; distinct interpretations or memories may be sparked for each viewer. Many of these works have an oneiric quality, as if envisioning fragments (a face or limb, a weathered surface, an old artwork) recalled from dreams but that remain tantalizingly beyond full comprehension. With his resonant mode of image-making, Herrera suggests that these ambiguous forms, and such realms as discontinuity, transience, obscurity, and even emptiness, may be fertile ground for creative transformation. In Herrera’s hands, photography becomes a medium for entering liminal spaces – between the physical and the psychological, the knowable and the unknowable – elusive territories that symbolize the possibility of grasping the metaphysical in the everyday world around us.

Elizabeth Ferrer is a New York-based curator and writer specializing in Mexican and Latino art and photography. She is the author of Lola Álvarez Bravo (Aperture, 2006), as well as curator of the accompanying traveling exhibition. Ferrer co-edited the landmark Museum of Modern Art publication Latin American Artists of the 20th Century, and has written for such journals as Art Nexus, Nueva Luz,
Art News, and Sculpture magazine. Ferrer was Director of the Austin Museum of Art and Director of the
Art Gallery of the Americas Society in New York. She studied art history at Wellesley College and Columbia University, and holds the position of Director of Visual Arts at bric|Arts|Media|Bklyn, Brooklyn, New York.
Herrera was the recipient of an Artist Residency at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, California in 2006. His work was selected by SF Camerawork, the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel and Photoalliance for their print collector’s programs.

La de Germán Herrera (Ciudad de México, 1957) ha sido una larga carrera fotográfica, que lo ha llevado a incursionar tanto en la tradición de la fotografía callejera gráfica como en la de la construcción de imágenes simbólicas. Su obra exhibida aquí, producida a partir de 2001, nos revela a un artista dueño de una voz madura de elocuente riqueza. Al utilizar tecnología digital, sus imágenes confluyen en un ámbito de objetos comunes y enigmáticos, elementos naturales, referencias históricas y texturas y atmósferas. Así, Germán conjura un mundo que es a la vez totalmente real e imaginario —una crónica del subconciente. Muchos fotógrafos que trabajan los formatos de imaginería construida o fotomontaje, lo hacen con un agudo sentido de intencionalidad, uttilizándolos como un medio para transmitir una declaración o idea específicas. En contraste, Herrera depende mayormente de la intuición y la emoción, más interesado en la posibilidad de encontrar significado fuera de las arenas de la razón y el intelecto puros.
Herrera se ha referido a este corpus de obra como un “Libro del ser”, expresión de la totalidad de creencias, sentimientos, miedos y mitos que en él subyacen. Pero al evocar una atmósfera personal, él crea ultimadamente espacios para la contemplación de lo universal. Cada imagen funciona como una especie de espejo que ofrece el potencial para que reconozcamos algo de nosotros mismos; evocando diferentes interpretaciones o recuerdos en cada espectador. Muchas de estas obras poseeen una cualidad onírica, como si envisionaran fragmentos (un rostro o un miembro, una superficie gastada, una vieja obra de arte) recogidos de suenos pero que permanecen tantalizadoramente más alla de nuestra total comprensión. Con su manera resonante de construir imágenes, Herrera suguiere que tanto estas formas ambiguas como los ámbitos de la discontinuidad, transición, obscuridad, e incluso el vacío pueden constituir tierra fértil para la transformación creativa. En sus manos, la fotografía se vuelve un medio para penetrar en espacios liminares —entre lo físico y lo psicológico, lo cognosible y lo incognosible—, territorios elusivos que simbolizan la posibilidad de acceder a lo metafísico en el mundo cotidiano que nos circunda.
