"Als Maler gewann er starken Einfluß, weil seine durch die Matisse-Schule gegangene Kunst dem in Deutschland vernachlässigten Kolorismus eine Lehre wurde und weil er mit seltener Einsicht sein Kunsturteil ausgebildet hatte. Er gehörte zu den denkenden Künstlern, doch dachte er nicht begrifflich, sondern anschaulich mit den Sinnen. Was sein Beispiel und seine Worte eindrucksvoll machte, war seine schwer erworbene Fähigkeit, das Künstlerische auf Grundgesetzlichkeit zurückzuführen. Ohne ein Lehrertemperament zu sein, war alles, was er tat und sagte, lehrhaft. Selbst dann, wenn ihm ein Bild missglückte, war das Misslingen noch charaktervoll und lehrreich.
Er hatte in der Pfalz bei seinem Vater als Dekorationsmaler gelernt, war Stuck-Schüler in München gewesen und hatte das Entscheidende in Paris erfahren. Der Entdecker seines Talents war in München Carl Voll gewesen. In Deutschland war er eine nicht alltägliche Erscheinung, weil er streng von der Form aus dachte und sich um Inhalt, Weltanschauung und Gehalt nicht kümmerte; doch nahm er den Begriff Form weit und tief genug, um alles Leben einzuschließen. Seine Erscheinung hatte etwas Nachdrückliches durch die Intensität des Ausdrucks. Sein Kopf fiel in jeder Gesellschaft auf; ohne ihn zu kennen, ließ sich von Purrmann sagen: dieser Mann ist gar nicht imstande, anders als wesentlich zu denken. Niemand hatte so viel Glück beim Herumstöbern in Antiquitätenläden, immer wieder fand er dort das Seltene und Unerkannt-Wertvolle. Es versteht sich, dass dieses Glück Verdienst war. Wie wenig andere hatte er die ganze Kunstkultur der Zeit und Vorzeit in sich aufgenommen, er vermochte den Künstlern aller Zeiten in die Seele zu blicken."
"As a painter he gained strong influence, because his oeuvre that had been strongly influenced by Matisse became a lesson to the colourism which had been neglected in Germany, and because he had elaborated his judgment of art with a rare deeper insight. He was a thinking artist, but he did not think conceptionally, but using his senses. What made his person and his words impressive was his learned skill to reduce art to the basics. Without having a teacher personality, everything he did and said was didactic. Even when he failed, his failure was still instructional and full of character.
He had learned the trade of a decorative painter at his father's business in the Palatinate, had been Stuck's pupil in Munich and had learned the key issue in Paris. His talent was discovered by Carl Voll in Munich. In Germany, he was not a common artist, because he thought strictly in terms of form and did not care about contents and view; but nevertheless he took the concept „form“ very seriously and included full life in it. His appearance had something insistent about it, due to the intensity of its expression. His head attracted attention everywhere, without knowing him one could say about Purrmann only this: this man can only think essentially. Nobody else was so lucky in browsing antique shops, he always found a rare or unknown valuable object. Of course he deserved the luck. Only like a few other people, he had perceived the whole art culture of that time and time before and could understand the artists' souls of all times."
"Comme peintre, il connut une influence considérable. Son art, marqué par son passage à l’Académie Matisse, fut une école au Colorisme, encore peu considéré en Allemagne. Doué d’un discernement rare il s'était par ailleurs forgé un jugement artistique personnel. Il comptait parmi les artistes pensants, il ne pensait cependant pas de manière conceptuelle, mais concrète, avec ses sens. Ce qui était saisissant dans son exemplarité comme dans ses paroles , c'est son habilité durement acquise de reconduire l'expression artistique à ses fondements. Sans pour autant avoir le tempérament d'un enseignant, tout ce qu'il eût entrepris, tout ce qu'il eût formulé finissait par avoir un caractère instructif. Même lorsque qu'un tableau lui échouait, le résultat n'en avait pas moins de caractère et n'en était pas moins instructif.
Il avait été formé au métier de peintre décorateur à l'atelier de son père dans le Palatinat, il fut l'élève de Stuck à Munich et eut son expérience décisive à Paris. C'est Carl Voll, à Munich qui décourvrit son talent. En Allemagne, il fut une figure peu commune, car il partait radicalement de la forme et ne se souciait point du contenu, de l'idéologie et de la teneur; mais sa considération de la forme était assez vaste et profonde pour en englober l'existence de toute chose. Ses manifestations avaient une énergie dûe à son intensité d'expression. Il avait une tête singulière, que l'on ne pouvait ne pas remarquer en société; sans même le connaître, il se disait de Purrmann: La pensée de cet homme ne peut aller ailleurs qu'à l'essenciel. Personne d'autre que lui ne connut autant de providence en chinant chez les antiquaires, il avait le don d'y trouver les perles rares. Bien entendu cette providence ne relevait que de son propre mérite. Comme peu d'autres il avait su intégrer toute la culture artistique de son temps et du passé, il avait la faculté de percevoir l'âme des artistes de tous temps."
Den tyske målaren Hans Purrmann föddes i staden Speyer 1880. De konstnärliga studierna inleddes i München där andra samtida elever bland annat var Paul Klee och Vassily Kandinsky. I november 1905 lockades Purrmann till Paris och fauvisterna där han blev en nära vän och kollega med Henri Matisse. Paris var därefter under en tioårsperiod hans hemstad innan han återvände till Tyskland. Den första stora separatutställningen ägde rum 1918 i Paul Cassiers galleri. 1935 flyttade han så till Italien och tillträdde som chef för The German Artists Foundation vid Villa Romana. Under andra världskriget förklarades Purrmanns konst som degenererad, målningarna försvann från museerna och han förbjöds ställa ut sina verk. Som en följd av detta flydde han till Schweiz där han garanterades arbetstillstånd. Purrmanns konst kännetecknas av en uppdriven kolorism och känslighet, motiven koncentrerades främst till stilleben, landskap och porträtt.
