Benninger graduated from the Cleveland School of Art and Western Reserve University. He was awarded several scholarships while there, including a year of post-graduate study. Teacher of commercial art at Rayen School. Bachelor of Science from Western Reserve University; diploma from Cleveland School of Art where he was a scholarship winner. Considered a regionalist painter, John Benninger was a high school teacher during World War II and a friend of painter Clyde Singer.
