Karl Hagemeister biography:

Karl Hagemeister was born on the river Havel in 1848. He enjoyed his first artistic training with his parents. Later, the landscape painter Ferdinand Konrad Bellermann became aware of the young student and advised him to train as a painter. Thus Hagemeister became a student of the painter and etcher Friedrich Preller the Elder. Between 1871 and 1873 he studied at the Princely Drawing School in Weimar. His studies were followed by trips to Rügen, Munich and later to the Netherlands, where he studied the works of Frans Hals, Rembrandt van Rijn and Jan Vermeer. In Italy he spent two years before returning home where he created mainly landscapes but also figurative compositions and portraits. In 1884 Hagemeister travelled to France. He was particularly interested in the work of Gustave Courbet and Édouard Manet. The German artist came into contact with the Barbizon school, which should have a considerable impact on his work. He made the acquaintance of Camille Corot, Eugène Delacroix and Théodore Rousseau. Back in Germany Hagemeister was a founding member of the Berlin Secession. He regularly exhibited his works, but only enjoyed German-wide success after a large group exhibition at the Galerie Heinemann in Munich in 1912.
