Minerva Josephine Chapman grew up in Chicago, was educated at Mount Holyoke College, then returned to study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago under Annie Shaw (1852-1887) and John H. Vanderpoel. By 1882, she was in Munich, then continued her studies at the Académie Julian in Paris.
