Thorvald Nygaard 1892-1973 was a Danish artist who was the son of the Politician Wilhelm Nygaard. He began his formal education as an artist at the age of 21 at the Technical School and Kunstakademiet (the Academy of Fine Arts) in Copenhagen from 1913-1921 and traveled on study tours to Germany, France and The Netherlands. He also lived and worked in Italy on several occasions.
Nygaard exhibited at the Spring Exhibition at Charlottenborg 1919 and 1926 as well as many exhibitions thouout Europe. He is known for his colorful and inspiring city and canal scenes of Copenhagen which found favor with collectors in Europe and America.
