The artist Tofan Ari Widianto was born in Jogyakarta, the cultural center of the Indonesian island of Java. He studied at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts – Jogyakarta and started his artistic career as a freelance sculptor and painter. Tofan Ari Widianto has meanwhile become one of the most important representatives of the still young Indonesian art production that gradually moves into the focus of an international audience. His oeuvre is characterized by a variety of different media and materials and may be interpreted as a comment on the current cultural and political situation in Indonesia.
