Walter Pendleton (1866-1942) was born in Glenbrook, Connecticut in 1866. He was known to have worked and lived in New York City for most of his adult life. He had a summer home in Islip, New York. A gifted artist, It is believed that Pendleton studied art in New York City. He exhibited at the Society of Independent Artists in New York City in 1934.

Pendleton was from a old wealthy New York family and had a vast structural steel business in the city, but, his true love had always been painting in oils. During his career he painted frequently near his home in Islip, Long Island where he summered and retreated. Around 1930 he retired from business, moved permanently to Islip, and devoted himself entirely to painting. He had a great love for the coastline and during his life he traveled frequently to Maine to paint along the shore.

Walter Pendleton died in the early morning hours in Islip, Long Island, New York on September 3, 1942.
