Werner Gilles biography:

After his military service Werner Gilles started studying at the Academy in Weimar mentored by Walther Klemm. Shortly after he transferred to the Bauhaus and became a student of Lyonel Feininger, where he made the acquaintance of Oskar Schlemmer and Gerhard Marcks. After the completion of his studies he traveled extensively to Italy and stayed for some time in Düsseldorf, Berlin and Paris. Especially the Italian island of Ischia had quite an effect on the artist serving him as a motif in many of his works. In the early years of his career, his way of painting was based on the Expressionists and the Blaue Reiter. By the end of the 1930´s, his art developed into a more academic and classical style and eventually returned to a stylized and more extensive manner during the post-war period.
